Born in Gifu, Japan, Ryo Ogawa is a master stencil artist who has gained international acclaim under the moniker
Roamcouch. His journey into the world of professional art was spurred by a life changing event. While he began drawing in his childhood and started working as a graphic designer at the age of eighteen, it was not until 2011 that he committed to a full time career as an artist. This pivot occurred after he was diagnosed with a serious illness which forced him to rethink his path and ultimately inspired the name
Roamcouch, symbolizing a place of rest and a haven for the soul. His technical prowess is defined by an incredibly labor intensive process where he meticulously hand draws and hand cuts upwards of fifty layers of stencils for a single piece. This dedication has allowed him to redefine the medium, blending the grit of street aesthetics with a romantic and cinematic quality he calls Neo Ukiyo-e.
For dedicated poster collectors and limited edition art print enthusiasts, the work of
Roamcouch represents a peak of precision and narrative depth. One of his most significant career milestones was his first solo exhibition in New York City in 2014 titled A Beautiful Life at
Under the Radar, where the entire collection sold out immediately. His work has since been featured in numerous high profile international venues. He held a major solo show titled Seeking The Stars at
Next Street Gallery in Paris in 2022 and more recently presented Stencil Poet at the same
Next Street Gallery in 2025. In his home country, he has frequently collaborated with
Gallery Kawamatsu in Tokyo for exhibitions such as Night Hawks and Love Tags.
The impact of Ryo Ogawa extends beyond the gallery walls through his Emotional Bridge Project, which he launched in 2014 to revitalize his hometown in Gifu through large scale public murals. These works often feature his signature characters, such as the playful painters or children set against dreamlike urban backdrops. Famous pieces of art by him that are highly sought after in the secondary market include When You Wish Upon A Star, Rainbow Inc, and We Live Here. Other notable works that have defined his career include Once Upon A Time In Brooklyn, Take My Heart, and the collaborative series with Jeff Gillette such as Castle Ruins. By utilizing traditional Japanese handmade Mino washi paper for many of his studio works, he bridges the gap between ancient craft and modern urban expression, ensuring his place as a pivotal figure for any serious collector of elite stencil art.
